campers and parents:

It is with very heavy hearts that we announce that our family and staff have come to the decision to cancel our 2020 Summer Season. After an extensive review of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic over the course of the last few weeks, as well as CDC reports from as recently as today, we realize that no amount of careful preparation or safety precaution could prevent a possible outbreak in our students or community this summer, and we are not willing to endanger the lives of those around us.

For the last 4 years, we have brought students from all over into our kitchen and shared fun, laughter, food, and friendship with them. We intend to do everything possible to continue to be able to teach and share with our community. We never envisioned this scenario. I am trusting that taking action, out of love and concern for others, will return that same care and love to us. As hard as it was to make this decision, we know it is the right thing for us to do. We can’t wait till the day we can safely reopen, but we know that day is not today.

As soon as we can safely do so, Turnip the Beet will reopen. Our decision also leaves room for creative onsite options later in the summer, options that more easily support social distancing. Here are other ways we pledge to continue for the time being:

  • We will continue to seek ways to educate students/campers and offer experiences to grow in culinary and pastry knowledge.

  • We are currently in the process of securing/planning safe pop up locations for end of summer events if possible.

  • We are striving to maintain communications with our community as we all work through the year.

  • We are working to create at home learning kits, provide virtual learning opportunities, and continue to have an online and social media presence during the time we are shut down.

  • We hope to proceed with our busy fall calendar, which is currently full of series, camps, and classes. We are not opening enrollment as of right now, but have plans for a normal schedule.

  • We will continue to stay up-to-date on regional, state, and national recommendations; we will update our site and programs within those guidelines.

  • We will be posting a thorough guide to questions and give specific details within the next few days. We are doing our absolute best to keep accurate and up to date info on our website.

If you are enrolled (or were enrolled) in any programming between March 9th and August 2020, you have received a credit on your student account in our booking system. If you are registered for 2020 Camp, we have a refund, rollover, and donation options for your 2020 tuition. You can fill out the form at the bottom of the page to let us know what you want to do.  Please be aware that refund processing times will be much longer than usual as we are experiencing a huge amount of cancellations and refund requests at this time. Our customer's comfort and safety is of our foremost concern at this time, and our intent is to give refunds to any family that wants one, as funds become available.

Summer programming makes up 70% of our income annually and Turnip the Beet has had to continue to pay our overhead costs and utilities during the time we have been shut down during the pandemic (beginning in March), thus this, combined with zero revenue during what is usually our biggest enrollment period, has severely depleted our resources. We require and appreciate all the support you can give, please consider donating what you can to help us continue our mission. We want children to find a wellspring of self-esteem and confidence and discover the joy of cooking, while also obtaining the basic educational and culinary skills that come from being in the kitchen.

Please consider donating what you can to help us continue our legacy.

In gratitude,
Chef Joy Wilson
